이달 초 순직한 연방 의사당 윌리엄 에번스 경관의 시신이 담긴 관이 최종 목적지까지 가기 위해 14일 애틀랜타 공항을 통과했습니다.
애틀랜타 경찰국 오토바이 부대는 이날 에번스 경관의 운구를 맡아 그의 마지막 가는 길을 호위했습니다.
에번스 경관은 지난 2일 의사당 검문소를 차로 들이받고 흉기를 휘두른 20대 남성의 난동으로 크게 다쳐 병원에 후송됐으나 숨졌습니다.
에번스는 18년간 의사당을 지켜온 베테랑 경관으로 알려졌습니다.
애틀랜타 공항을 거쳐간 에번스 경관의 유해는 15일 메사추세츠 애덤스 지역 한 묘지에 묻혀 영원한 안식에 들어갔습니다.
애틀랜타 경찰은 페이스북을 통해 “에번스 경관 가족들의 위해 기도하겠다”며 추모했습니다.
앞서 13일 의사당 로툰다홀에서는 에번스 경관의 7세, 9세 자녀들이 지켜보는 가운데 추모식이 열렸습니다.
이 자리에는 조 바이든 대통령을 포함해 의회 지도자들이 대거 참석해 그의 희생을 기렸습니다.
의사당에 관을 공개적으로 두는 추모행사는 미국 의회가 숨진 민간인을 기리는 가장 높은 명예 중 하나입니다. 1998년 이 관례가 만들어진 후 지금까지 4명의 의사당 경관을 포함해 6명 만이 이런 예우를 받았습니다.
바이든 대통령은 이날 지난 1월 의회 난입 사태 당시 폭도들에 의해 숨진 의회 경찰 브라이언 시크닉 경관 추모식에 이어 두 달 만에 또다시 의회 경찰관의 순직 앞에 고개를 숙였습니다.
