조지아주에도 이르면 다음주 코로나 19 백신이 보급될 것으로 알려진 가운데 애틀랜타에 본부를 두고 있는 질병통제예방센터(CDC)가 백신접종 부작용에 대해서도 경고하고 있습니다. 이승은 기자가 메트로 애틀랜타 지역서 백신 임상시험에 참여했던 주민들의 경험을 토대로 발생 가능한 부작용 증상들에 대해 알아봤습니다.

알파레타에 거주하는 밴 허슬러씨는 지난 가을 코로나 19 백신 임상시험에 참여했습니다. 허슬러씨는 1차 접종을 마치고 하루 뒤 독감 증상과 유사한 증상을 경험했다고 했습니다. “열이 104도까지 오르고 속이 메슥거려 여러 시간 침대에 누워있었다” 는 허슬러씨는 “시간이 지나면서 열이 내려 괜찮아졌다”면서 “증상을 없애기 위해 별다른 약을 복용하지는 않았다”고 했습니다. 이어 “잠시 독감 증상을 겪는 것이 치명적인 바이러스에 감염되는 것 보다 훨씬 낫다”고 전했습니다.
허슬러씨는 제약회사 모더나와 화이자의 코로나 19 백신 임상시험에 참가한 수 만명 중 한 명입니다.
메트로 애틀랜타 지역서 임상 시험 업체를 운영하는 네이선 세갈 박사는 735명의 임상 시험을 도왔습니다. 참가자 중 절반에게는 백신을 투여했고 나머지 절반에게는 식염수 플레이스보를 투여했습니다. 모든 참가자들은 한 달 간격으로 동일한 약물을 두 차례 투여 받았습니다.
세갈 박사는 “실제 백신을 투여받은 참가자 중 50-60%에서 피로나 두통, 근육통, 오한 등의 경미한 부작용이 나타났다”고 밝혔습니다. “부작용은 보통 2차 접종 후 발생했으며 하루나 이틀 정도 지속됐다”고 했습니다. 하지만 “크게 우려할 만한 부작용은 없었다”며 “이 정도면 바이러스 감염 예방을 위해 매우 합리적인 대가를 지불하는 셈”이라고 했습니다.
또다른 백신 임상 시험 참가자 로드니 밀턴씨는 “일반에게도 백신이 보급되는 시기가 오면 백신 접종을 장려해야 한다”고 했습니다. 밀턴씨는 “많은 사람들이 백신에 대해 두려움과 불확실성을 가지고 있는 것을 알지만 백신 접종은 너무나 중요한 일”이라고 했습니다. 그러면서 “아이스 버킷 챌린지와 유사한 캠페인을 펼쳐서라도 백신 접종을 권장할 필요가 있다”고 강조했습니다.
