애틀랜타저널이 7일 측근들의 말을 인용해 보도한 바에 따르면 제프 던컨 조지아 부주지사가 재선 출마를 고려하지 않고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다. 공화당 소속인 던컨 부주지사는 재선 도전 대신 자신이 내건 ‘GOP 2.0’라는 계획을 주도하며 트럼프 시대 이후 공화당 내부 전열을 가다듬는데 집중할 것으로 전해졌습니다.
던컨 부주지사는 지난 수개월 간 재선에 출마할 뜻이 없음을 공공연히 시사해 왔지만 공식적인 입장을 밝힌 적은 없습니다. 익명을 요구한 소식통은 부주지사가 아직 최종 결정을 내리지 않은 상태라고 전했습니다.
도널드 트럼프 전 대통령의 대선 패배 이후 대부분의 공화당원들이 트럼프 전 대통령을 감싸거나 그의 분노를 피하기 위해 몸을 사릴 당시 던컨 부주지사는 트럼프 전 대통령을 비롯해 공화당 지도부와 정면 충돌해 왔습니다.

그는 또 ‘앞날을 향한 더 좋은 길’을 외치며 최근 GOP 2.0 웹사이틀 개설하고 공화당내 독자적인 그룹 형성을 위한 단계에 돌입했습니다.
전직 프로야구 선수 출신인 던컨 부주지사는 포사이스카운티 지역구를 대표하는 주하원의원으로 3번째 임기 도중 2018년 부주지사 선거에 출마해 당선됐습니다.
이후 브라이언 켐프 주지사의 조력자로 자리를 굳혀 왔지만 조지아주 선거가 불법이라는 트럼프 전 대통령의 거짓 주장에 대해 수차례 반박하는 발언을 하면서 같은 공화당 의원들로부터 소외 당하기 시작한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
던컨 부주지사의 재선 출마에 대한 공식 입장이 나오지 않은 가운데 공화당내에서는 벌써부터 부주지사 자리를 놓고 스티브 구치 주상원의원과 버치 밀러 주상원의원 등 후보자들의 이름이 거론되고 있습니다.
