조지아내 백신 접종에 좀처럼 속도가 나지 않아 주민들의 불만이 폭주하자 브라이언 켐프 주지사가 12일 오후 주청사에서 기자회견을 열고 주내 백신 보급 현황에 대해 직접 해명에 나섰습니다.
켐프 주지사는 “주민들의 불만에 대해 의심의 여지가 없다”며 “충분한 백신 분량만 있다면 즉시 모든 주민들에게 접종을 시행할텐데 사실 그것은 불가능하다”고 말했습니다. 또한 “예약 접수 전화 연결이 어렵고 보급소 웹사이트들이 다운되는 것을 알고 있다”며 “엄청나게 많은 주민들이 오늘 당장 백신을 접종받으려고 예약을 시도하다보니 발생하는 일”이라고 설명했습니다. 이어 “인내심을 가져달라” 부탁하면서 “현재로서는 힘들어도 예약만이 백신을 접종받을 수 있는 가장 확실하고 빠른 방법”이라고 강조했습니다.
이날 켐프 주지사는 일부 보급소가 백신을 비축해 둔 채 접종을 하지 않고 있다는 보고가 들어왔다며 해당 보급소들은 즉각 접종을 실시할 것을 경고했습니다.
주정부는 백신 접종 대상을 65세 이상 주민들로 확대하고 접종을 위해 반드시 사전 예약을 주문했지만 접종 확대 시행 첫날인 11일부터 백신 보급소 예약 사이트들이 다운되고 예약 전화가 불통이 되는 등 곳곳에서 문제점들이 속출했습니다.
조지아주의 백신 접종률은 미시시피에 이어 전국에서 가장 낮은 수준을 보이고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다. 이는 앞으로 주정부가 추가 백신 분량을 확보하는데 좋지 않은 영향을 끼칠 수 있어 큰 문제로 지적되고 있습니다.
