한인타운 재고 동나…코스트코 등 구입수량 제한
지난 3월과 달리 공급 확대…패닉 빠지지 말아야
겨울철을 앞두고 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)이 재창궐하면서 화장지 등 위생용품 품귀 현상이 한인타운에도 영향을 미치고 있다.
19일 애틀랜타의 대표적 한인타운인 둘루스 월마트의 화장지 코너는 고객들의 사재기 현상이 재연되면서 선반이 텅 빈 모습이었다. 월마트는 전국적인 수요 폭증으로 화장지를 비롯한 위생용품의 수급 조절에 어려움을 겪고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
이날 둘루스 할인형 매장인 코스트코는 화장지 선반에 “고객 1인당 1팩만 구입이 가능하다”는 안내문을 붙여놓았다. 코스트코 외에도 크로거와 퍼블릭스 등 식품점 체인들도 화장지와 종이타월 구매량을 제한하고 나섰습니다.
지난 3월 코로나19 팬데믹이 처음 시작됐을 때도 미국 소비자들이 사재기에 나서 위생용품의 물량 부족 현상이 벌어진 바 있습니다. 하지만 업계 전문가들은 당시와 비교하면 최근 품귀 현상은 아주 심각한 수준은 아니라며 “패닉에 빠지지 말라”고 당부하고 있습니다.
미국 소비자브랜드협회는 “방역을 위한 제한조치가 지역 단위로만 시행되고 있고, 소비자와 제조업체, 유통업체들이 이전의 경험을 토대로 잘 대처하고 있기 때문에 당시와는 상황이 다를 것”이라고 예상했습니다.
