조지아 주정부는 지난 11일부터 백신접종 대상을 65세 이상으로 확대하고 백신접종을 장려하고 있습니다. 백신을 접종 받으려면 예약이 필수인데 시행 일주일이 지난 현재도 예약이 쉽지 않습니다. 고령의 주민들은 온종일 전화기를 붙들고 있거나 컴퓨터 앞에서 접속을 시도하는 일이 마치 풀타임 노동을 하는 것 같다며 스트레스를 호소하고 있습니다.
애틀랜타 남서쪽에 거주하는 로사 크로우리(78)씨는 “백신을 제공하는 모든 카운티와 단체 혹은 업체에 연락을 취했지만 이미 예약이 다 찼다는 얘기만 들었다”며 실망감을 금치 못했습니다.
또다른 주민 도리스 레이스(75)씨는 “백신 접종을 예약하는 일에 완전히 지쳤다”고 했습니다. “이른 아침부터 자정까지 온라인 예약을 위해 접속을 수차례 시도했지만 접속 장애 등으로 혈압이 올라가고 과도하게 스트레스를 받아 그냥 중단했다”고 했습니다. 레이스씨는 “이 모든 과정이 마치 풀타임 노동과도 같다”고 표현했습니다.
하지만 모두가 운이 없는 것은 아닙니다. 데이빗 그린씨의 경우에는 지난 토요일(16일) 모더나 백신을 접종받았고 4주 뒤 2차 접종 예약까지 완료했습니다. 그린씨는 “우리 가족은 매주 일요일밤마다 함께 저녁 식사를 했었는데 백신접종을 다 마치는 2월말 쯤에는 다시 그런 시간을 가질 수 있을꺼라 기대하고 있다”고 했습니다.
지난주 조지아는 전국 50개 주 가운데 백신접종률 49위를 기록하며 최하위 수준을 나타냈습니다. 한편 주보건국은 백신 관련 핫라인을 개설하고 문의사항에 대한 답변을 제공하고 있습니다. (문의:888-357-0169)
