취임 100일을 맞은 조 바이든 대통령이 조지아주에 살고 있는 지미 카터 전 대통령 부부를 찾아가 만남을 갖습니다.
백악관은 오는 목요일(29일) 바이든 대통령 부부가 카터 전 대통령의 고향인 조지아 남서부 플레인스를 방문할 예정이라고 밝혔습니다.
이후 바이든 대통령 부부는 취임 100일을 기념하며 지난 선거에서 민주당에 결정적 승리를 안겨 준 메트로 애틀랜타 지역을 찾아 행정부의 정책 지지를 호소하는 드라이브인 집회를 가질 계획입니다.
바이든 대통령과 카터 전 대통령은 오랜 시간 돈독한 관계를 맺어 왔습니다. 카터 전 대통령이 백악관 입성 당시 델라웨어 출신 바이든 대통령은 연방 상원의원으로서의 첫 임기를 수행하고 있었습니다. 카터 전 대통령은 지난해 민주당 전당대회서 “바이든은 나의 재임기간 가장 강력하게 지원해 준 최초의 상원의원이었다”고 언급했습니다. 또 “수십 년 동안 그는 충실하고 헌신적인 친구가 되어 주었다”며 진심어린 감사를 전한 바 있습니다.
올해 96세로 미국 역사상 최장수 대통령인 카터 전 대통령은 부인인 로잘린 여사와 함께 코로나19 팬데믹이 시작된 이래 줄곧 고향인 플레인스 자택에 머물러 왔습니다.
때문에 바이든 대통령의 취임식에도 참석하지 못했는데 이는 카터 전 대통령이 1977년 취임 선서를 한 이후 불참한 첫 취임식이기도 했습니다.
바이든 대통령은 취임식 연설에서 “미국을 위해 헌신한 카터 전 대통령의 일생에 경의를 표한다”며 각별한 우정을 드러냈습니다.
