자신이 돌보던 2세 여아를 때려 숨지게 한 크리스티 해나 플러드(29)가 지난 11일 샌디스프링스 경찰에 체포됐습니다. 몬테레이 파크웨이 선상 한 아파트에서 아이가 의식을 잃은 채 발견된 지 이틀 만이었습니다. 아이는 사건 발생 당일 애틀랜타 아동병원으로 긴급히 이송됐지만 사망선고를 받았습니다.
피해 가족들에 따르면 사망한 아이는 펄론 프리들리(2)입니다.
가족들은 지난 8월부터 베이비시터인 플러드에게 풀타임으로 아이를 맡겨왔다고 했습니다. 부모는 플러드가 이런 범죄를 저지를 것이라고는 의심조차 하지 않았다고 했습니다.
플러드는 당초 경찰에 “아이가 공원 미끄럼틀에 머리를 부딪힌 후 깨어나지 못했다”고 진술한 것으로 알려졌습니다. 하지만 프리들리양의 상태를 검사한 의사들이 다른 부상들을 발견하면서 부검을 지시했고 부검 결과 사망한 아이의 몸에서 수차례 부상당한 흔적이 발견된 것으로 드러났습니다.
수사관들은 플러드의 휴대전화에서 ‘어떤 부류의 사람들이 다른 사람의 아이를 학대하는 것을 즐기는가’와 ‘다른 사람의 자녀를 갑자기 때리고 싶은 충동을 느끼는 이유’ 등에 대해 인터넷 검색을 한 사실을 알아냈습니다.
수사가 진행되면서 플러드의 과거 행적도 속속들이 밝혀졌습니다.
스머나시에 거주해온 플러드는 2010년 이래 가정폭력 관련 2건의 폭행 혐의와 약물 소지 혐의 등으로 여러차례 경찰에 체포된 바 있습니다. 19세 때는 DUI 혐의로 기소되기도 했습니다.
이번 프리들리양의 사망으로 플러드에게는 2건의 중죄 살인을 포함해 악의적 살인, 가중 폭행, 1급 아동학대 혐의가 각각 1건씩 적용됐습니다. 플러드는 현재 보석없이 풀턴 교도소에 수감조치됐습니다.
온라인 상에 고펀드미 페이지를 마련한 프리들리양 가족들의 지인들은 “펄론은 살아갈 미래를 앞에 둔 오직 2살 밖에 안 된 아름다운 작은 소녀였다”며 “어린 딸의 비극적인 사망으로 충격에 빠진 가족들에게 위로를 전한다”고 했습니다.
