조지아 선거당국과 주법무부가 내년 1월 상원 결선투표를 앞두고 잠시 조지아로 거주지로 옮겨 한 표만 행사하고 다시 돌아가려는 타주 주민들을 향해 이는 ‘유권자 사기에 해당된다’며 강력히 경고하고 나섰습니다.
현재 조지아에서는 대선 투표 관련 감사가 진행되면서 재검표가 수작업으로 이뤄지고 있는 가운데 유권자 사기 의혹에 대한 증거는 발견되지 않고 있습니다.
하지만 연방상원 2석이 걸려있는 조지아주 상원 결선투표가 전국적인 핫이슈로 떠오르면서 최근 양당 지지자들 가운데 조지아로 이사하려는 움직임이 일고 있다는 소문이 확산되자 선거 관계당국이 직접 나서 입장을 밝힌 것입니다.
오는 1월 5일 조지아에서는 데이빗 퍼듀(공화) 의원과 존 오소프(민주) 후보, 켈리 뢰플러(공화) 의원과 라파엘 워녹(민주) 후보의 결선 투표가 치러집니다.
가브리엘 스털링 조지아 선거 시스템 매니저는 지난 12일 기자회견서 “조지아주가 미국서 사업하기 가장 좋은 주이기 때문에 사업을 위해 이사하는 주민들은 언제든 환영하지만, 정치적 의도를 가지고 조지아로 와서 상원 투표에 참여하려 할 경우 법정에 서게 될 것”이라며 “조지아의 선거 시스템을 만만하게 보지 말라”고 경고했습니다.
스털링 매니저는 이 자리에서 최근 상원 투표를 앞두고 민주당 후보들을 지지하기 위해 조지아로 이사를 하겠다고 말한 앤드류 양 전 민주당 대선 후보를 언급하며 “이같은 발언이 조지아주 선거를 잘못된 방향으로 매도하고 있다”고 비난했습니다.
앞서 조지아 법무부도 유권자 사기에 대해 경고하면서 앤드류 양 전 대선 후보를 언급하며 주의를 준 바 있습니다. 이에 대해 양 전 후보는 “투표할 계획은 전혀 없다”고 해명한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
주법무부는 어느 형태든 유권자 사기 행각을 벌이는 자는 중죄 혐의를 받아 10년 징역형과 10만달러 벌금형에 처해질 수 있다고 강조했습니다.
