브래드 래팬스퍼거 주무장관은 22일 주청사에서 기자회견을 열고 “합법적으로 등록된 조지아 주민들만이 주 선거에 참여할 수 있다”고 말했습니다. 래팬스퍼거 주무장관은 앞서 이미 여러 차례 “타주 유권자가 조지아에서 선거의 진실성을 약화시키려는 행위를 하도록 결코 용인하지 않을 것”이라고 강조해 왔습니다. 이날 주무장관은 “누구든 결선을 앞두고 조지아주에 와서 투표권을 행사하려 한다거나 타주에 거주지가 등록돼 있지만 조지아 선거 시스템을 농락하려는 자들이 있다면 반드시 색출하여 법이 허용하는 한 최대한의 대가를 지불하도록 할 것”이라고 재차 경고했습니다.
주무부가 발송한 편지를 받게 될 8천여명은 연방우정국을 포함해 전국주소변경(NCOA)시스템 자료를 바탕으로 조지아주 밖에 거주하면서 상원 결선을 위한 부재자 투표를 신청한 사람들입니다.
편지에는 “합법적인 조지아주 유권자가 아니면서 투표하는 것은 주법에 따라 최대 10년 징역형, 최대 10만 달러 벌금형에 처해지는 중죄에 해당한다”고 적혀 있는 것으로 알려졌습니다.
주무부는 이들 중 대학생이나 군인과 같이 조지아에 거주지를 두고 타주에 임시 거주하면서 부재자투표를 신청한 사례는 불법 행위에 해당되지 않는다고 했습니다. 반면 “타주에 거주지를 둔 학생들이나 주민들이 조지아주에서 다시 유권자 등록을 할 경우 조지아주 뿐 아니라 자신의 거주지가 속한 해당 주의 선거법에 따라 선거 사기죄로 처벌받을 수 있다”고 덧붙였습니다.
