8일부터 조지아내 식당과 술집에 대한 코로나19 규제가 전면 완화되면서 업주들도 한숨 돌리게 됐습니다. 하지만 일부 식당들은 당장 ‘노멀’로 돌아가진 않겠다며 여전히 조심스런 입장입니다.

메트로 애틀랜타 지역서 식당을 운영하는 랜디 파크스씨는 “지난해 자택대피령 이후 리오프닝을 한 뒤 처음에는 테이크 아웃 주문만 받고 이후 야외 테이블 영업을 지속해 왔는데 식당 매출에 큰 지장 없이 그럭저럭 잘 운영이 됐다”고 했습니다. 이어 “당분간도 계속 안전을 위해 이같은 방식을 지속할 예정”이라고 밝혔습니다.

애틀랜타서 식당 3곳을 공동 운영하는 피에트로 지아니씨도 “백신접종을 원치 않거나 코로나19 위험에 노출될까 걱정하는 손님들에게 붐비는 식당 환경은 공정하지 못하다고 생각한다”며 “팬데믹 이전처럼 의자를 다닥다닥 붙여 영업하지 않을 것”이라고 전했습니다.

조지아에서는 팬데믹이 시작된 이래 1백만명 이상이 코로나19에 감염됐습니다. 하지만 최근 신규확진사례가 지속적으로 감소하면서 하루 평균 감염사례가 1400건 미만으로 지난해 6월 이후 최저치를 유지하고 있습니다.

하지만 백신접종률은 여전히 전국 최하위 수준에 머물고 있습니다.

질병통제예방센터(CDC) 통계에 따르면 조지아 주민 중 오직 28%만이 최소 1회차 접종을 완료한 것으로 집계됐습니다. 이는 50개주 가운데 꼴찌에서 3번째로 전국 평균 접종률 33%에도 못 미치는 것으로 드러났습니다.

보건 전문가들은 브라이언 켐프 주지사의 이번 조치가 아직 백신 접종을 받지 못한 주민들에게 위험한 메시지를 전달하고 있는 것이라며 우려를 나타내고 있습니다.

앰버 시미트케 전염병학 박사는 “너무 이른 규제 완화는 필수 직종자들을 높은 위험 속에 처하게 만들고 결과적으로 조지아 전체에 영향를 끼칠 것”이라고 지적했습니다.
